Have you struggled to find common ground with those whose beliefs seem different from yours? Perhaps even seem diametrically opposed? This is a piece we will need to work through, individually and collectively, in order for humanity to take our next big step forward in evolution. It is not easy and it calls for us to see clearly through the illusion of our mental beliefs to the truth of our spiritual knowingness. How do we say “yes, yes, I see you” to those who are saying, “no, no, you’re nothing like me”? How do we transcend our own desires to create separation from those we disagree with or even feel dislike?
Years ago, I answered my door to be greeted by two young Mormon missionaries, spreading the Christ’s word. For those who don’t practice that religion, the first reaction may be to try to excuse yourself from the conversation as quickly as possible. That particular day, I was guided to talk with them. They asked me about my faith, and I shared about my connection with the Christ and ways that I focus on incorporating spiritual practice into my everyday life. I spoke about coming from my heart and from love rather than the dogma of a specific religion. They shared in kind their spiritual practices. One missionary in particular was very enthusiastic about focusing on love as a guide and responded in kind with his own approach of bringing love into his faith. I truly enjoyed seeing his face light up with joy and passion as he spoke. I felt very much uplifted and felt a very deep connection with them.
As we talked, I was aware that they were hearing my words through their own filters and applying meaning based on their specific beliefs. I knew that if we had continued the conversation in more detail, we would have uncovered a significant divergence in our understanding of divine truth. But the purpose of the conversation was not to teach them my understanding; it was to teach me. It was a reminder that we can experience true unity, regardless of differences in our beliefs. None of us tried to persuade the other to change beliefs or follow a different path. They could feel the strength of my commitment to my path, and I respected their commitment to theirs. We simply communed where our paths met.
I invite you to practice communing soul-to-soul in all conversations, focusing on the feeling being communicated rather than the perceived meaning of the words themselves. When we focus on speaking from our hearts and connect through our divine consciousness, it is easy to see our common ground. When we see beyond individual, limiting beliefs, we see our world from the divine truth that connects us all. This is Divine Unity through Christ Consciousness.
